Why It Matters
Ömer Günel states that he has been detained for approximately 7 months and that no indictment has been prepared against him yet.
Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel, who was arrested and suspended from duty, announced in his statement on his social media account that he applied to the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office about İYİ Party Kuşadası District Chairman Behçet Alp in order to investigate some allegations that were made public within the scope of the investigation.
In his application, Günel requested "the examination of the interviews held in the prison, the allegations of information leakage regarding the investigation file, and the allegations that some detainees were directed to make statements against him in exchange for release."
"JUSTICE IS MEANINGFUL ONLY WHEN IT IS JUSTICE FOR EVERYONE"
Arguing that during the investigation process, during which he has been detained for about 7 months and an indictment has not yet been prepared, serious allegations have emerged that the public should know about and the judicial authorities should investigate, Günel said:
"For this reason, today, through my lawyer, I made a report about Behçet Alp to the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The basis of my notice is the allegations regarding Behçet Alp's meetings in prison with some people arrested within the scope of the investigation carried out by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
Information about who he met with during the process is included in the petition. More importantly, in some news that appeared to the public, serious allegations were made that detained people could be released in return for them benefiting from effective repentance and making statements against me, and that some connections could be used in this regard. "I think it should be investigated whether these allegations are true or not."
HE REQUESTED PRISON ENTRY AND EXIT RECORDS TO BE INSPECTED
"Another important issue concerns the investigation's file numbered 2025/186146, which has a confidentiality/restriction order. The number of this investigation and information about the investigation against me were included in a petition submitted on March 10, 2026, three days before I was taken into custody, before any judicial action was taken against me. My question is extremely simple: Who, how and when did they access the number and content of a restricted investigation? Therefore, the information in question I requested that the source be investigated and the statements of relevant people be taken on this matter.
I also requested that the statements of the people Behçet Alp met within the scope of the investigation be taken, prison entry and exit records be examined, and if deemed necessary, HTS/base records on the relevant dates be investigated. I do not see this application as a political fight. For me, the issue is much more important: that justice should not be overshadowed by any political showdown, personal enmity or other relationships.
I don't blame anyone in advance. However, if there are such serious allegations that are reflected in the public, I believe that they should not be covered up. I want only one thing from now on, as it has been until today: Let the truth come out. Let the evidence speak. The law should be applied equally to everyone. Because justice is only meaningful when there is justice for everyone."
