Vice President Vance said the US is investigating allegations that a hover bomb hit a wedding in Iran

Vice President Vance said the US is opening an investigation after there was information that a glide bomb hit a wedding in Iran, killing 5 people.

"We are investigating, because obviously we are interested and want to know the truth of the incident," Vice President JD Vance told the press on September 3, when asked to comment on Iran's allegations that the US military hit a wedding in the city of Kuhestak, killing at least 5 people in an air strike two days earlier.

Vice President Vance expressed "extreme skepticism" about Iran's information, but did not rule out the possibility that US forces made a mistake. "When mistakes are made, the US military will learn to try to do better," he said, emphasizing that this is the "big difference" between the US and Iran.

The US Department of Defense announced that it was "aware" of the accusations from Iran, but affirmed that they "never targeted civilians".

Reuters news agency quoted an unnamed US official as saying that the country is considering many scenarios related to casualties at the wedding, including the possibility that this was a US attack or an Iranian anti-aircraft missile flying off course.

Based on images of the scene, four military experts told Reuters that the wedding was hit by a direct hit, not unintended damage caused by the projectile colliding with another target nearby.

Three people determined that these were not Iranian air defense missiles but American weapons. One expert said that the projectile missed its target. Among the debris recovered at the scene are believed to be parts of the AGM-154 JSOW precision guided bomb.

Iranian state media said on September 3 that a 22-year-old woman died at the hospital, bringing the total number of victims killed in the wedding raid to 5. The incident also injured nearly 70 people.

Adil Haque, professor of international law at Rutgers Law School, noted there was no indication that the area around the building had a military target, emphasizing that the US military needed to provide a transparent explanation because "the attack on the wedding seems completely unreasonable and unjustifiable".

The tragedy took place about six months after a guided missile hit a primary school in Hormozgan province, southern Iran, killing more than 175 children and teachers. Iran accused the US of targeting the school. According to Reuters, the US military's internal investigation showed that this force likely caused the incident, but the Pentagon has not made the results of the investigation public.

AGM-154 is equipped with an inertial navigation system combined with GPS satellite positioning. The AGM-154C variant also has an integrated infrared detector to lock on the target during the descent.

The original AGM-154A glide bomb uses a BLU-97/B cluster warhead. The AGM-154C variant in the US Navy and Marine Corps is equipped with a BROACH warhead similar to the Storm Shadow cruise missile, including a primary explosive charge to penetrate reinforced concrete and ground, paving the way for a large explosive warhead to penetrate inside and cause maximum damage.
