Princess Astrid dies after performing her final duties at King Harald's funeral

Princess Astrid's last official engagement was the funeral of her older brother, King Harald, on Wednesday.

Harald, who reigned on the Norwegian throne for more than 35 years, died last month at the age of 89.

Many names from European royal families and heads of state attended the funeral. Participants included Prince William of Wales and three Scandinavian kings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and prime ministers of five foreign countries also attended the ceremony in Oslo.

Thousands of people gathered along the route to bid farewell to King Harald during the funeral procession from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral.

The Norwegian Royal Family was on the agenda with both health problems and public debates in the last months of King Harald's life.

Documents that emerged at the beginning of the year revealed that King Haakon's wife, Queen Mette-Marit, had frequently communicated with pedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein in the past. Mette-Marit later said she wished she had never met Epstein.

Marius Borg Høiby, the Queen's son from a previous relationship and not considered an official member of the royal family, was sentenced to four years in prison in June for two counts of rape.

Hoiby, who was under house arrest while the appeal process was ongoing, was given permission to attend King Harald's funeral.

The death of Princess Astrid, who came shortly after the beginning of the reign of Haakon VIII, who ascended the throne following the death of King Harald, once again plunged the Norwegian Royal Family into mourning.
