The prosecutor's office initiates an investigation against Antoni Macierewicz regarding the parliamentary intervention before the Academy of Justice

The spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw announced the initiation of an investigation against Antoni Macierewicz. According to the prosecutor's office, the former Minister of National Defense and Law and Justice MP exceeded his powers during his parliamentary intervention before the Academy of Justice. The head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński, submitted a notification on this matter.

Behind the scenes of the dispute over the Academy

The case is related to the decision of the Minister of Justice, Waldemar Żurek, who dismissed the Rector-Commandant of the Academy, Dr. Michał Sopiński. This decision caused a wave of protests in front of the university's headquarters, in which PiS politicians also participated. PiS MP Maria Kurowska stayed in the building for some time and refused to leave.

The events culminated on September 13, when several PiS MPs, including Antoni Macierewicz, tried to get into the Academy building secured by the police. Macierewicz, citing the parliament's intervention, demanded to be allowed inside. The recordings from the incident show the MP confronting the police, showing his ID and demanding entry. At one point, he touched the uniform of one of the officers to read his name, and then threatened to take the case to court.

Reaction and accusations

The head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński, called Macierewicz's behavior "scandalous" and announced that he had submitted a report to the prosecutor's office. According to the prosecutor's office, Macierewicz allegedly threatened the officers with initiating criminal proceedings to force them to let him into the building.

The prosecutor's office emphasizes that the purpose of the MP's entry was to provide food, drinks and medicines to the MP inside, which does not fall within the scope of parliamentary intervention.

The Academy of Justice under the microscope

After Sopiński's dismissal, the duties of rector were taken over by prof. Ph.D. Sławomir Cudak. The Ministry emphasizes that he is authorized to manage the university. Meanwhile, the head of the Chancellery of the President, Zbigniew Bogucki, said that the government's actions are "another attempt to unlawfully influence the independence of institutions."

The Justice Academy, established in 2018, educates officers of the Prison Service and other services, as well as civilians.
