Protests at French schools escalate: 625 arrests and numerous injuries

The riots and protests at French schools have increased in scope and intensity, leading to 625 arrests during the day. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said in Paris that 83 police officers and 32 teachers and students were injured. 356 schools were affected by protests. The violence increased significantly and there was destruction in schools and arson. Teachers' cars were also set on fire.

The protests began on Friday at secondary schools in the greater Paris area. They are directed against a lack of funds, a lack of teachers in schools and dilapidated buildings.

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke of the legitimate concerns of young people, but in no way justified violence and attacks on police officers, teachers and media representatives who reported on the protests. With a view to possible police violence surrounding the protests, Macron said officers must adhere to their professional duties and violators must be prosecuted. “But I think the violence comes primarily from those who pushed and trampled on teachers.”
