Water pipe bursts in Hamburg: drinking water supply partially restored

After water pipes burst, there were problems with the drinking water supply in parts of Hamburg. In the afternoon there were numerous reports of pressure fluctuations and restrictions on the water supply from various parts of the city, as Hamburg Wasser reported. Teams worked hard to fix the problems.

In the evening, Hamburg Wasser announced that the drinking water supply had largely been restored. “Supply for customers is now secured in large parts of the affected areas.” In one street, individual households are still affected by restrictions. Two water trucks were provided for emergency supplies for these residents. At the same time, initial investigations into the cause of the damage were underway.

Water in cellars and underground garages

The fire brigade had a major operation near the main train station, among other places. A fire brigade spokesman said that several cellars and underground car parks were filled with water. There were additional smaller pipe bursts in individual houses. There are no injuries.

Numerous callers had previously reported large amounts of water on the roadway and affected side streets, the fire department reported in the evening.

When the first emergency services arrived, Amsinckstrasse in the area of ​​the North Canal Bridge was largely under water, the fire department reported. Firefighters also discovered sagging and a washed-out road surface in the Amsinckstrasse area. According to Hamburg Wasser, there were still significant traffic disruptions there in the evening.

Powerful pumps

Firefighters were busy with extensive security and reconnaissance measures in the afternoon. They cordoned off endangered areas. Several powerful pumps were used, also with the help of the Technical Relief Agency (THW). During the course of the operation, Hamburg Wasser was able to stop the water leak. A total of 40 firefighters and the THW were on site.

According to a spokeswoman for Hamburg Wasser, there were two burst pipes: one on Amsinckstrasse and one on Fuhlsbüttler Strasse. The burst pipe in Amsinckstrasse led to pressure drops in Neustadt and St. Pauli. Due to the burst pipe on Fuhlsbüttler Straße, the pressure fell in Ohlsdorf, Winterhude, Barmbek and Marienthal.

In an official warning, the police pointed out the disruptions and significant traffic delays caused by the burst pipes. People should avoid the affected area and reduce water consumption to the bare minimum.
