Raphaël Glucksmann supports sending French soldiers to Yemen and proposes increasing the energy check

Presidential candidate Raphaël Glucksmann said Friday that Emmanuel Macron was “right” to send French soldiers to protect the port of Yanbu, an important Saudi oil export terminal, while calling for the development of the energy check for the French.

“It makes sense to ensure that there is a strategy (...) which aims to secure alternative supply routes to the Strait of Hormuz”, and Emmanuel Macron “is right to say that we must resolve the problem at the source”, estimated the founder of Place publique. The head of state announced Thursday the sending of “soldiers, radars, defense systems to protect” this Red Sea port, crucial for exporting Saudi hydrocarbons by bypassing Hormuz, locked by Iran in response to the offensive launched by Israel and the United States.

But we must also “respond to the social emergency of the French”, underlined the MEP, candidate in the socialist primary, during a trip to the former mining basin of Pas-de-Calais. “We must respond to these French people” who “cannot cope with the explosion in fuel prices” via “targeted aid” rather than through costly and less effective “generalized tax cuts”, he said.

Mr. Glucksmann advocated “increasing the energy check from 150 euros to 500 euros for the French who already benefit from it” and extending its allocation with a “energy check of 200 euros to 10 million additional French people”. The government announced this week that it would bring forward the payment of the energy check, which concerns 5.8 million households, from April to January 2027.
