Russia and Ukraine exchange drone strikes, causing casualties and infrastructure damage

At least two people were killed and several others injured as Russia and Ukraine exchanged waves of drone strikes overnight, with attacks reported across parts of both countries.

In Russia, two people were killed and 12 injured after Ukrainian drones struck Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan, regional authorities said on Sunday. The two civilians died after a drone hit a tree near their parked car, according to the office of Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov. Nizhnekamsk is home to a major oil refining and petrochemical hub, including several large industrial facilities. Mayor Radmir Belyaev said a fire broke out at one of the city's enterprises, without providing further details. Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russia's oil and gas infrastructure with long-range drone strikes, saying the sector helps finance and sustain Moscow's war effort. Kyiv has also claimed that the attacks have contributed to fuel shortages and rationing in parts of Russia. Ukraine's defence intelligence agency said its drones struck a major oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban in Russia's Krasnodar region overnight. It claimed the strikes hit an oil processing unit and a tank farm, triggering a large fire. Krasnodar authorities said three people were injured in a strike on an "enterprise" in Slavyansk-on-Kuban. They also reported damage to an oil pipeline and a fire but did not directly confirm Ukraine's claim about the refinery. Russia's defence ministry said its forces intercepted 389 Ukrainian drones overnight, including drones over Tatarstan, other Russian regions and Crimea.

Russian strikes hit Odesa, western Ukraine

In Ukraine, at least nine people were injured in what officials described as a massive Russian drone attack on Odesa. Serhii Lysak, head of the city's military administration, said the strikes hit the Black Sea port city, which has faced repeated Russian drone and missile attacks. The latest assault came a day after a Russian drone struck a residential high-rise in Odesa, killing two people and injuring 26 others. Regional governor Oleh Kiper said the upper floors of the building were completely destroyed. Russian drones also targeted western Ukraine overnight. One drone struck near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing with Poland, setting a petrol station on fire, according to Ukraine's foreign minister and a local customs official. The attacks come as Russia has intensified its aerial campaign against Ukraine in recent weeks, using drones and ballistic missiles to test Ukrainian air defences. Ukrainian officials have also warned that Moscow is increasingly targeting energy infrastructure ahead of winter, raising concerns about the impact on civilians.
