Russian Ambassador to Berlin Calls Nord Stream 2 Proposals 'High Treason' in Germany

BERLIN, September 25. /TASS/. Proposals to use the surviving line of Nord Stream 2 pipeline are equated to something akin to high treason in Germany, Russian Ambassador to Berlin Sergey Nechayev wrote on the embassy's Telegram channel.

"Proposals to use the surviving Nord Stream 2 line to resume Russian gas supplies are equated to near-high treason. Of course, this game, driven by political expediency, can be played further, but the facts are undeniable. The rejection of reliable, long-term supplies of cheap Russian energy has become a catalyst for energy and socio-economic problems in Germany," Nechaev stated on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the pipeline attacks.

"Large industrial enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, and private households are acutely feeling the consequences," he added.

"The much-touted deliverance from dependence on Russian energy resources, which the German authorities boasted about, has backfired, depriving Germany of the competitive advantages upon which its prosperity was built for decades," the diplomat said.

"Years of recession and stagnation, rising prices, a wave of bankruptcies, and the relocation of manufacturing and capital abroad are not Russian propaganda, but the consequences of Berlin's shortsighted policies in recent years, rooted in absolute Russophobia," Nechayev concluded.

On September 26, 2022, unprecedented destruction was recorded on three lines of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines. As a result, only one line of Nord Stream 2 remained intact and could theoretically be launched. Following the damage to the pipelines, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation initiated a case into an act of international terrorism. The timeframe for restoring the pipelines' operational capacity cannot currently be determined.
