S-Bahn closure on Berlin's light rail system announced for 2027

Following the ongoing closure of the Berlin Stadtbahn for long-distance and regional trains, S-Bahn traffic on the route will be affected next year. Between June 11th and September 2nd, 2027, there will be no S-Bahn trains running between the Friedrichstrasse and Tiergarten stations, as the railway announced. The closure will be temporarily extended to the Zoological Garden and Charlottenburg train stations, it said. The “Tagesspiegel” had previously reported.

The reason for this is construction work on the S-Bahn line. According to Deutsche Bahn, ten so-called roadway superstructures will be replaced. In the area of ​​the Tiergarten S-Bahn station, switches should also be replaced. During the closure, further maintenance work will be carried out, such as cleaning the tracks and refurbishing the switches.

Restrictions continue

This means that the restrictions for passengers on the important Berlin east-west connection continue. The bridge and track work currently underway at the main train station and the Zoological Garden station will last until December 12th.

In regional transport, no trains run between the Charlottenburg and Ostbahnhof train stations. There are also disruptions in long-distance transport.

The situation will become even more difficult for passengers to North Rhine-Westphalia from October onwards. Then the general renovation of the Berlin-Lehrte route begins. For 14 months, long-distance trains will be rerouted via Braunschweig and Magdeburg and will take around 80 minutes longer. Replacement buses are being used again in regional transport.
