Salvini meets the governors of the North for a truce in the League

After the summer storm in the League, the armed truce is signed at the leader's house. It is here that Matteo Salvini receives the governors of the North at lunchtime: Attilio Fontana, Massimiliano Fedriga and Maurizio Fugatti, plus a former historian like Luca Zaia. An hour and a half summit to seek a compromise between the secretary and the old Northern guard who are pushing for an expansion of the leadership.

"I can't wait to share - replies the 'captain' from the stage of the Officine Farneto as he closes the party event 'In your defense' -. I will involve all the people who have ideas and values ​​to carry forward, starting with the governors. Acting as party secretary". An underlining that is called the applause and encouragement of his audience. Translated: ok for greater collegiality and sharing of responsibilities (perhaps - some speculate - also in compiling the electoral lists for the next political elections) but no sideways steps.

The common objective is to safeguard Pontida and move forward without trauma until September 20th. "We all agreed to meet together in Pontida in the face of some ill-omened birds - says Salvini -. We promised to see each other in the next few days because we have a timetable of things to do". And the secretary of the Lombard League, Massimiliano Romeo, among those who have been most exposed in criticizing the party's management, confirms: "Pontida is sacred, we will all be united".

At the end of the summit, which lasted about an hour and a half, the party released a note describing the results as follows: "An opportunity to discuss the League's roadmap in view of the coming months and the upcoming electoral deadlines. The desire to start work in the next few days aimed at defining a programmatic manifesto, capable of gathering the League's ideas, priorities and proposals, was shared". The atmosphere was "one of absolute collaboration".

In the truce the four representatives of the north managed to hold a united line, even if some different nuances emerged: a greater wait-and-see attitude on the part of Veneto compared to the interventionism of Lombardy. The meeting point does not completely cover the internal frictions. Well measurable during the event organized at Officine Farneto in Rome, on that part of the League close to Salvini.

Who in the morning met Governor Fontana in the speakers' room but then did not attend his speech from the stage, apparently due to commitments at the ministry. While the 'captain' leaves, the leader of the League group in the Senate arrives, Massimiliano Romeo, who - according to rumors - could be replaced by Claudio Borghi at Palazzo Madama. He belittles it: he jokes about having "crashed" the Salvini event and replies: "Group leader yes, group leader no, I will continue my commitment to the renewal of the party", a "strong signal is needed both towards the base and towards the voters".

Having said that, "nothing falls apart, we build together". Salvini carries on and, despite holding out his hand, removes a few pebbles from his shoes: "For me, as a Milanese" it is difficult "to hypothesize a Northern branch... I still have five green shirts in my wardrobe in Milan and when someone didn't yet know they were in the world we had more than one battle". "I - he says - joined the Lombard League in 1990. But the world of '90 is not that of 2026: today to defend Northern businesses you have to be strong in Brussels". The specter of Roberto Vannacci, who contributed so much to exacerbating the crisis within the party, remains in the background for today. The secretary doesn't even mention him: "I gave trust to someone who didn't deserve it. But I can say that all those who left the League have lost a big family."
