Students of Büyük Mutlu Primary School in Viranşehir developed a concussion mitigation project inspired by the seahorse tail with a biomimetry approach.
Aviation, Space and Technology Festival (TEKNOFEST), of which Anadolu Agency (AA) is the "Global Communication Partner" and carried out by the Ministry of Industry and Technology and the Turkish Technology Team Foundation (T3 Foundation), welcomes its visitors at Şanlıurfa GAP Airport.
The project, developed by students at Büyük Mutlu Primary School in Viranşehir under the guidance of Class Teacher Nedret Biçaktaş, is presented to visitors at the TÜBİTAK area in TEKNOFEST Southeast.
Taking advantage of the biomimetry approach, which aims to produce technology from the characteristics of living creatures in nature, students researched seahorses in TÜBİTAK's Biomimetry magazine given by their teachers.
Students saw that the seahorse's tail has a flexible and durable structure, even though it consists of bony segments joined together, and they developed their work in this direction, considering that this feature can be used to reduce the effects of concussions and impacts.
The students aim to use the flexible module they prepared, inspired by the tail structure of the seahorse, in vehicle suspension systems and building columns to contribute to reducing vibrations.
Class Teacher Nedret Biçaktaş told the AA correspondent that his students used rough village roads on their way to school within the scope of bussed education and experienced various shocks during the journey.
"Our children were inspired by seahorses without seeing the sea"
Stating that it aims to help students find solutions to the challenges of the geography they live in, Biçaktaş said:
"We wanted to turn a problem experienced by our children into an opportunity. In our minds, 'Should people be condemned to the difficulties of the geography they live in?' He had a question. "Based on this, we wanted to develop a technology that would benefit humanity."
Explaining that the students developed the project by researching the tail structure of the seahorse, Biçaktaş said, "Our children were inspired by the seahorse before they saw the sea. They saw the seahorse in a magazine I brought and it caught their attention, and later, when we researched it together, we developed the designs inspired by the bone structure of the seahorse." he said.
Menessa Derekçi, a 4th grade primary school student, said that she came to the village school with transportation and that they experienced tremors during the journey due to the bad roads.
Stating that they developed the project based on the problem they experienced, Derekçi stated that he was happy that their work was exhibited at TEKNOFEST.
Muhammed Barış Durman, one of the students, stated that the project is important and explained that they have done a great work at a young age.
On the other hand, the project developed by the students was deemed worthy of the "Best Social Benefit Award" in the "Nature, Environment and Sustainability" category of the Technologies for the Benefit of Humanity Competition held in Diyarbakır.
