This Friday (25th), Santa Casa de Presidente Prudente will carry out a group of ophthalmological exams for 60 SUS patients awaiting cataract evaluation and treatment. The action starts at 8am, at Banco de Olhos Maria Sesti Barbosa, located inside the hospital.
The patients were previously contacted by the Regional Department of Health (DRS) and will undergo consultations and evaluations with ophthalmologists.
From the exams, cases that require cataract surgery will be identified. When there is a medical indication, the need for other procedures, including corneal transplantation, can also be assessed.
In cases where there is an indication for surgery or transplantation, the patient will follow the Santa Casa care flow, with treatment carried out through the Unified Health System (SUS), at no cost to the patient.
The initiative is carried out annually by the hospital in partnership with Banco de Olhos Maria Sesti Barbosa and is part of Green September actions, an awareness campaign about the importance of organ and tissue donation.
In addition to the joint effort, Santa Casa carries out guidance on organ donation throughout the year. In September, the work is reinforced with lectures for employees and the community.
Until September of this year, however, the hospital had not yet carried out any organ harvesting. In the same period of 2025, four multiple organ captures and another four corneal captures were recorded.
The number of cornea transplants performed by Santa Casa also fell. In 2026, until September, three transplants were carried out, compared to ten in the same period in 2025.
According to nurse Anderson Milhorança, responsible for the hospital's Organ Procurement and Transplants area, one of the factors related to the scenario is the increase in family refusal to donate.
"Among the reasons for refusal are religious issues, lack of knowledge about the patient's wishes for life and, mainly, the lack of information. Therefore, our job is to clarify the family's doubts and show that donation is an act that can transform and save lives", he explained.
The professional also highlights the importance of talking to family members in advance about the desire to be a donor, as the family's authorization is necessary for the donation to be carried out.
