Sassetot-le-Mauconduit: gathering to demand the resignation of the condemned mayor

Nearly 200 people gathered on Saturday August 29 in front of the town hall of Sassetot-le-Mauconduit in Seine-Maritime, near Fécamp, to demand the resignation of Mayor Éric Scarano, sentenced Thursday August 27 to 18 months in prison for possession and distribution of child pornography images, reports ICI Normandie. The municipal council also unanimously requested the resignation of the elected official, mayor of this town of around 1,000 inhabitants since 2008.

Éric Scarano, also vice-president of the Fécamp agglomeration, was arrested and placed in police custody on July 1. He was tried on Thursday August 27 by the Le Havre criminal court as part of a deferred appearance procedure. The court sentenced him to 18 months' imprisonment with a three-year probationary suspension. The courts also banned him for ten years from carrying out any professional or voluntary activity involving contact with minors and registered him in the automated judicial file for perpetrators of sexual or violent offenses (Fijaisv).

For the moment, the mayor has not resigned

Éric Scarano was suspended on July 1 from his duties as fourth vice-president of the Fécamp urban community. However, he has not, at this stage, resigned from his mandate as mayor. During the gathering, Alain Bazille, departmental councilor of the canton of Fécamp and vice-president of the departmental council of Seine-Maritime, indicated that he had spoken with the family of the elected official. “She assured me that he was going to resign from all his functions as a local elected official,” he said.
