Maurizio Cappato, former police officer in Cuba, disappeared at sea: Farnesina in contact with family

Maurizio Cappato disappeared on August 24 during a fishing trip and for days the Farnesina has been in continuous contact with the family of the man, a former police officer who moved and lives in Cuba for years.

The report made to the Cuban police is followed up by the Embassy and personally by Ambassador Simona De Martino. Both his Cuban wife, who lives in Cienfuegos, and his daughter Mary in Italy, with whom the ambassador herself also spoke, were informed. The Cuban police are continuing their searches, both in the wooded hinterland of the place from where Cappato disappeared and along the entire coast.

The investigations

The hypothesis of the police, with whom the ambassador herself also spoke this morning, is that the compatriot is lost at sea. If this were the case, searches for the body could be very difficult due to the strong currents affecting that stretch of coast. While other emergencies are underway which currently concern Italian citizens in Cuba, assistance to Cappato's family has continued without interruption: among other things, the family has received a copy of the complaint from the Cuban police, and in turn has filed a missing person report with the Italian authority. The diplomat also sent Cappato's daughter her personal cell phone for every need. Just as the first relative interested in the research, namely Cappato's wife who is present on the island, is continuously informed.
