SG Flensburg-Handewitt wins the northern derby against VfL Lübeck-Schwartau and moves into the DHB Cup round of 16

Handball Bundesliga team SG Flensburg-Handewitt fought its way into the round of 16 of the DHB Cup. In the northern derby of the second round there was a 38:35 (16:19) victory against the second division team and Schleswig-Holstein rivals VfL Lübeck-Schwartau. The best throwers with eleven hits each were Simon Pytlick from Flensburg and Ole Hagedorn from Lübeck.

The hosts were missing Magnus Holpert, who was trained in the Flensburg youth team. The son of Flensburg goalkeeping legend Jan Holpert had to miss the game for health reasons. Another family connection between the two clubs: Simon Möller started in goal for the guests. His father Peter won the cup with VfL in 2001.

Flensburg turns the encounter late

After the 1:3 in the fourth minute, Lübeck-Schwartau gained control of the game. At 14:11 (23rd), the lead of the fifth-placed team in the 2nd league was three goals for the first time, and shortly after the break it was even a lead of four goals (20:16/31st). Flensburg ran behind this deficit for a long time. It wasn't until the 46th minute that Emil Jakobsen managed to equalize again at 27:27. Aymeric Minne gave the guests a 29:28 lead (49th). In the final phase, the Lübeck team lacked the strength to hold their own against their opponents from a higher class.

The round of 16 will be drawn on Saturday after the SG's guest appearance in the 117th North Derby at THW Kiel (kick-off 6 p.m./live on Dyn and on ARD). The next round will be played on November 11th and 12th.
