Serbian President Vucic dissolved the parliament: Early election decision

In his speech, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that the parliament that took office with the elections held on December 17, 2023 was dissolved.

Vucic stated that it was decided to hold early general elections on October 25, 2026. Drawing attention to the protests and civil unrest in Serbia in the last two years, Vucic stated that the early elections were the result of the tensions and that postponing the elections would bring more harm.

"We need election results that will clearly determine which direction Serbia will move," Vucic said. Vucic said, "Democracy is the best of political systems and a better one has not been found yet. You will have the opportunity to choose from many options," and stated that the aim is to protect democracy.

The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) decided to participate in the elections with the electoral coalition called "United Serbia" and selected President Vucic as the prime ministerial candidate. According to the Serbian Constitution, Vucic must first resign from the presidency in order to become prime minister. Vucic had previously announced that he would do this within this month.

When Vucic leaves office, Parliament Speaker and former Prime Minister Ana Brnabic will act as president and will need to set a date for new presidential elections. This will mean Serbia will hold presidential elections shortly after general elections in October.

The next parliamentary elections in Serbia were planned to be held in December 2027, but after 2 years of protests led by students, Vucic announced that early elections would be held. Vucic has made different statements regarding the timing of early elections and talked about possible dates since the beginning of the year.

Vucic, who has ruled the country as president and prime minister for 12 years, was faced with anti-corruption protests that started in November 2024, when the concrete porch of the train station in Novi Sad city collapsed, killing 16 people.
