Siri AI usage limit is coming, it will be paid

Apple has officially confirmed that it will impose usage limits for Siri AI. Expanded access will also be available as a paid option. The statement came at the balance sheet meeting attended by the company's new CEO, John Ternus. CFO Kevan Parekh and COO Sabih Khan were also present at the meeting. Therefore, the news came directly from the company management.

This decision is not surprising, because running AI is becoming increasingly expensive. As a matter of fact, many artificial intelligence companies have already reduced usage limits on paid plans. For example, Grok halved the limits on its Grok Bot agent service without telling anyone. Therefore, Apple's move seems to be in line with the general trend in the industry.

Where Does the Cost Come From for Siri AI?

Kevan Parekh said the balance of Siri running on-device and running in the cloud is still at a very early stage. Therefore, it is difficult to predict how the cost will shape up. According to Parekh, the operation on the device is very efficient. Moreover, it costs almost nothing.

On the server side, the situation is different. Apple pays the inference cost here. In other words, the processing power spent on the server for the model to produce each answer puts a burden on the company. For this reason, cloud-based features have a special place in terms of cost.

Siri AI Subscription May Be Linked to iCloud+

Neither the price nor the usage limits are clear for now. However, some features that are more cloud-dependent will require a subscription. It is stated that this subscription will most likely be associated with iCloud +. Therefore, it is necessary to wait for new statements for details.

Google follows a similar path. The company's Google One plans offer expanded Gemini access. Thus, both major players connect artificial intelligence access to their existing subscription packages.

New Siri Coming with iOS 27

The new artificial intelligence-based Siri was introduced with iOS 27. Apple's Foundation Models were trained using Google's Gemini models. However, Siri AI does not work on Gemini. Gemini only came into play during the training process.

The new Siri can actually answer questions. It also makes a big leap forward from what it used to be. But it's running a little slow now. On the other hand, it is technically still in beta phase. The beta tag is likely to remain until iOS 28, maybe longer.
