South Korean Female Service Members Expand Roles on Front Lines

As South Korea prepares to mark the 76th anniversary of Women’s Army Corps Day on Sunday, female service members are drawing attention for their expanding roles on the front lines, from commanding tanks and artillery operations to guarding the tense western maritime border.

According to the Marine Corps on Friday, four female Marines currently serving with the Yeonpyeong Unit on the northwestern border islands of Yeonpyeongdo and Udo have emerged as examples of that shift ahead of Women’s Army Corps Day on Sunday.

Their duties span a wide range of frontline operations, including commanding K1E1 main battle tanks and armored recovery vehicles as part of island defense missions, as well as overseeing firing operations and ammunition management for K9 self-propelled howitzers.

On Udo, near the Northern Limit Line in the Yellow Sea, female Marines also help lead coastal surveillance operations along one of South Korea’s most sensitive front lines. Others provide emergency medical support in areas where access to civilian medical services is limited.

Women are increasingly being viewed as a key part of the military’s response to one of its most pressing long-term challenges — a sharp decline in available troops caused by the country’s demographic crisis. Once concentrated largely in support fields such as administration and medical services, female personnel have expanded into a broader range of operational roles, including positions directly involved in combat missions.

South Korea’s female military corps traces its origins to the 1950-53 Korean War, when around 500 women joined the Women’s Volunteer Army Corps in 1950. Seventy-six years later, about 20,000 female service members serve across the country in both frontline and rear-area units.
