Anti-Terrorism Court closed in Syria

The controversial Anti-Terrorism Court, where dissidents and demonstrators were tried during the deposed Assad regime, was legally closed after the vote in the Parliament.

The structure, which was implemented as an exceptional alternative to the Supreme State Security Court, which was abolished in Syria in 2011, became operational with the Decree Law No. 22 dated 26 July 2012.

This institution, equipped with broad powers and known as the "Anti-Terrorism Court", was the target of intense reactions because it became the main authority where peaceful demonstrators and opposition figures were tried throughout its operation.
