Vaccines for foxes – what does the action look like?

In the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, rabies vaccine drops are underway to prevent the spread of this dangerous disease.

Lures in the form of brown cubes or discs with an intense, fishy smell are scattered from airplanes and placed manually in forests, fields, meadows and parks.

Inside each bait there is a blister with a preparation that, when eaten by the fox, makes it immune to the virus.

Rabies is one of the most dangerous viral diseases that attack the nervous system of both animals and humans.

Initial symptoms may resemble flu, but later they appear, among others: hydrophobia, salivation and serious neurological disorders.

The disease is almost always fatal if not diagnosed and treated early enough.

Veterinary services appeal to residents not to touch the scattered baits. After contact with humans, vaccines lose their effectiveness because foxes sense human scent and avoid such cubes.

Owners of dogs and other pets should be especially careful when walking. If an animal swallows the bait, contact your district veterinarian immediately

Thanks to regular vaccination campaigns, the number of rabies cases in Małopolska has significantly decreased. In 2010, 118 cases of this disease were recorded, and a year later 60. Since 2018, not a single case of rabies has been reported in the region.
