The school in Wrzesin closed due to structural damage

Students from the school in Wrzesin (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship) will learn remotely until September 21, because construction supervision has suspended the use of the building - Jacek Jatkiewicz, the mayor of Jonkowo, announced on Wednesday.

There are 163 students and 37 preschoolers.

Technical expertise and urgent action

As the mayor added, the construction supervision ordered the preparation of a detailed technical assessment.

These are cracks inside and outside the structural walls of the school building. The construction supervision ordered the preparation of a technical assessment regarding the condition of the facility, among others: with particular emphasis on the geotechnical opinion, the impact of the detached part of the facility on the remaining parts of the building and the technical condition of the gas and electricity installations - emphasized the mayor.

The last inspection of the building took place in December 2025. Minor defects were then repaired, but the current damage is much more serious. Of particular concern is the boiler room with a gas furnace, which is located in the damaged part of the building.

Remote learning and transport organization

The commune authorities ensure that children will not be left without care. Until the experts and possible repairs are completed, students and preschoolers will learn remotely.

We are working to ensure that children from Wrzesina study in Jonkowo at not too late hours, because parents indicated that children also take part in other additional afternoon activities - assures Mayor Jatkiewicz.

Transport is also being organized for children who will attend school in Jonkowo after returning to full-time education.

Causes of problems – changes in the school environment

Construction supervision points out that many new buildings have been built around the school in recent years. This could have changed the soil and water conditions and led to uncontrolled subsidence of the building. It will now be crucial to re-examine these conditions and determine whether the school can be safely operated.

For now, it is not known when students and preschoolers will return to their schools. It all depends on the results of expert opinions and the decisions of construction supervision.
