In light of recent incidents of candidates wearing smart glasses during exams, the University Entrance Examination Center has increased penalties for all exams.
From August 1 next year, anyone caught wearing or carrying smart glasses - regardless of whether they are in use - will be considered cheating and receive a zero for the subject, the University Entrance Examination Center Examinations Board said.
Candidates who refuse to hand over their equipment or cooperate with inspections will face immediate disqualification, the center said.
Candidates who are disqualified will be barred from the Multiple Admissions Program and individual applications, and will not be admitted to any department that takes GSAT scores into consideration, said Wang Hongren, executive secretary of the committee.
Meanwhile, students who submit false information during the college admissions process — whether caught before admission, before registration, during school or after graduation — will face serious consequences, Wang said.
Penalties include revocation of admission, expulsion from school, recovery of degree certificates and cancellation of degrees, he added.
Serious cases will be referred to the judiciary, he said, warning applicants not to take chances as violations could have a profound impact on the candidates' academic future and reputation.
For the next academic year, the multiple admissions plan provides 15,518 places, and the individual application channel provides 50,606 places.
The approved quota for the exam distribution channel is 20,575, and the final number will be increased by rolling in unused quota from other channels.
English is the most commonly used screening subject in the Multiple Entry Scheme and individual application channels, with 985 and 1,090 departments requiring candidates to achieve a minimum score in this subject respectively.
The University Subject Aptitude Test English listening test is used as a screening requirement by 29 departments under the Multiple Admissions Program and by 27 departments under individual applications.
Some departments also incorporate Advanced Placement Computer Science (APCS) test scores into the first stage of screening, either as a minimum requirement or through weighted screening, or as a designated test in the second stage of individual applications.
These include 50 departments offering the APCS component and 41 departments offering the Information Security component.
Under the test distribution channel, Chinese is the most commonly assessed university subject proficiency test subject, required by 1,497 departments and colleges, while 19 departments require English listening tests.
Although taking subject proficiency examinations at various universities remains optional, the committee urges candidates to take all subjects required, tested, or weighted by the department to which they intend to apply.
