Taiwan Reports Surge in Chinese Military Activity Around Territory

Taiwan experienced a significant increase in Chinese military activity around its territory on Saturday, with multiple Chinese aircraft and naval vessels around its territory. Taiwan's ministry of national defence (MND) detected up to 20 sorties of various types of PLA aircraft, along with six PLAN vessels and five official ships. "Overall, 20 sorties of various types of #PLA aircraft (including J-11, Su-30, H-6, Y-8 EW and KJ-500 aircraft) were detected from 0824 hours today”, MND said in a post on X.

According to the ministry, 12 out of 20 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's northern, central and southeastern part of the air defence identification zone (ADIZ) while conducting China’s "Joint Combat Readiness Patrol" and "Air-Sea Joint Drill". “Armed Forces have monitored the situation and responded accordingly", the defence ministry said.

On Thursday, Taipei said it detected five PLAN vessels and three official ships operating around its territory. On Wednesday, one sortie of a PLA aircraft was recorded along with 5 PLAN vessels and 3 official ships operating around Taiwan, detected up until 6am (UTC+8). As per the data cited by Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA), 244 Chinese vessels were detected near Taiwan waters last month. The number was 55 in June, and 30 in May. Leading to an average of approximately eight Chinese vessels per day. ANI reported, citing The Taipei Times.

The unprecedented scale of Chinese military presence around the region has become a growing concern among officials, with a CGA official describing the situation as becoming "increasingly severe." China claims Taiwan as its own territory and views the island as a breakaway province that must be united with the mainland, stating that Taipei is an inalienable part of its territory under the "One China" principle.
