September 12 Message from the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Numan Kurtulmuş

Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmuş, published a message on his social media account regarding the 46th anniversary of the military coup of September 12, 1980.

Kurtulmuş noted the following in his message:

"Although 46 years have passed since the September 12 coup, which left deep wounds in the memory of our society, we have never forgotten the pain of that dark period when the national will was suspended and fundamental rights were severely destroyed. Coups and tutelage attempts, which occurred in different forms throughout the history of our Republic, were foiled each time by our nation's defense of its will and democracy.

In the future of our country, there is no place for any group or mentality that claims power and legitimacy above national sovereignty. I condemn the coups and tutelage attempts and resolutely express our belief in Türkiye's democratic maturity and the law of brotherhood. "On this occasion, I respectfully commemorate the victims of all coups, especially September 12, and wish God's mercy to our citizens who lost their lives."
