There was nothing unusual about the way the tragedy first came to light. A tutor arrived at a family home in Acton, Massachusetts, for an appointment. No one answered the door. The father could not reach his wife or children either. He called the police and asked them to check on his family. What officers found inside the house on Tuesday, August 11, turned a routine welfare check into a double-homicide investigation. The bodies of 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan and her 14-year-old son, Siddharth Aravind, were found inside the home on August 11. Their 17-year-old son, Arjun Aravind, was missing. Within hours, police found him in his mother's car in nearby Wayland and arrested him. Now, the case has drawn attention far beyond the Massachusetts town because prosecutors say the teenager had recently been using the internet- including AI and ChatGPT- to search for and create “fictional scenarios” involving the killing of his own family. According to CNN, prosecutors said Arjun had used the AI chatbot to explore what they described as “theoretical ideas or fantasy stories” about killing his family. Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said investigators found that he had been creating Gothic-novel-style stories, developing characters and asking questions that appeared to relate to threats against his family.
A welfare check that uncovered a family tragedy
The sequence of events began when a tutor arrived at the family's Martha Lane home and could not get inside. Arjun's father, who had been unable to contact his family, then contacted Acton police. Officers who went to the house found Siddharth on the first floor and his mother in the basement, according to prosecutors. Both had suffered obvious trauma. At a subsequent court hearing, prosecutors described evidence of a physical and violent struggle and said blunt-force trauma had been involved. The official cause and manner of death were initially awaiting findings from the medical examiner. Arjun was not at the house. Investigators said he had left in his mother's Honda Accord. The search ended early the following morning when Wayland police responding to an unrelated alarm spotted the vehicle in a parking lot. Arjun was inside and was arrested without incident, authorities said. Items found in the car were also said to correspond with the murder scene.

The most unusual detail in the investigation emerged after Arjun's arrest. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said the teenager had recently displayed what investigators considered concerning behaviour. This included internet activity and use of ChatGPT to explore “theoretical ideas or fantasy stories” concerning the killing of his family. Ryan said the teenager appeared to be using the chatbot to develop fictional narratives, including Gothic-style stories and characters. Investigators believed some of those scenarios appeared connected to threats against members of his family. The detail has inevitably raised questions about the role of artificial intelligence in the case. But prosecutors have not said that ChatGPT instructed Arjun to commit the killings, nor have authorities established that the chatbot caused the alleged violence. That distinction is important. The investigation is examining Arjun's internet activity as part of a much larger picture of his behaviour and circumstances.
Father had reportedly become concerned
Court proceedings have also shed light on concerns within the family before the killings. According to CBS News Boston, Arjun's father had become worried about his son's behaviour and internet activity and had begun hiding knives in the house. The precise reasons for those concerns, and whether they were directly connected to the alleged killings, remain part of the investigation. Arjun's defence lawyer, Debra DeWitt, has requested a psychiatric evaluation. She told reporters after his arraignment that the family had recently moved to Acton partly to provide a support system and schooling for the children. The teenager has pleaded not guilty.
What charges does Arjun face?
Arjun has been charged with two counts of murder, along with charges including assault and battery on a family or household member, assault and battery and offences related to the alleged unauthorised use and theft of a motor vehicle. He was held without bail following his arraignment. His next major court appearance, a probable-cause hearing, is scheduled for September 11. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against Arjun have not been proven in court.
