A three-year-old boy was rescued from Munger, Bihar, after being kidnapped from a Delhi hospital.

NEW DELHI: A three-year-old boy allegedly kidnapped from a government hospital in west Delhi was rescued from Bihar's Munger district after Delhi Police tracked the accused woman over a distance of more than 1,000km. Police said the child went missing on Aug 27 while playing at GGS Hospital in Khyala. His mother had gone to collect medicines when he was allegedly taken away.

Following a PCR call at 12.07pm, Khyala police registered a case and launched a search for the child. “CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding areas showed an unidentified woman carrying the boy away,” DCP (West) Hareshwar V Swami said. Police scanned footage from multiple cameras and tracked the woman's movements as she travelled towards Madipur in an e-rickshaw.

She was subsequently identified as 31-year-old Chunari Devi, a temporary resident of Madipur and a native of Bihar. Local inquiries revealed that Devi had left Delhi for Bihar. Acting on technical surveillance and local intelligence, a police team followed the trail for more than 1,000km and reached Asnaha village in Munger district, where the child was safely recovered. Devi was traced and joined the investigation.

During questioning, she allegedly told police that she was the mother of six daughters and had kidnapped the boy because she wanted to raise him as her own son. Police said she claimed medical complications had prevented her from having another child. The boy was brought back to Delhi and reunited with his family.

Clancy admits strangling her three children in January 2023 but pleads not guilty by reason of insanity due to postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors allege premeditation. The jury in Plymouth Superior Court continues deliberations.
