An exploitation of fear

Data centers, electricity and Bitcoin miners in the same sight
Data centers have become an electoral issue. Electricity bills are climbing in the thirteen states covered by PJM, the eastern American network operator, where capacity auctions have reached unprecedented levels driven by demand for computing. Local moratoriums are multiplying from Virginia to Ohio and hostility to new sites crosses both camps a few months before the midterm elections.
The shift of miners towards AI was underway well before this controversy. IREN signed a hosting contract with Microsoft valued at 9.7 billion dollars, Cipher Mining closed a 5.5 billion agreement with Amazon Web Services, TeraWulf rents its rooms to Fluidstack with the guarantee of Google, and Galaxy Digital reconverts its Texan Helios site for CoreWeave. The same building can today house mining machines and clusters of GPUs, the graphics processors that train the models.
Mining, however, retains a card that training centers do not have: the flexibility of its load. A Bitcoin farm cuts its consumption in seconds when the network saturates, and Texas' demand response programs have turned this flexibility into a source of revenue. A training cluster does not cope well with interruption in the middle of a calculation lasting several weeks.
