Trump threatens Iran with “economic war” – Tehran rejects threats

There has been no success in negotiations so far, and the US President is now intensifying his rhetoric. Tehran rejects all threats - and the oil price is back to July levels.

Washington, Dusseldorf. As negotiations between Tehran and Washington fail to make progress, US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with an unprecedented “economic war”. Every country, including its financial institutions, companies, airports and government agencies, should expect “HUGE economic consequences” if they support Iran, he wrote on his Truth Social platform. The help of all US allies is needed to stop the threat posed by Iran.

Iran, on the other hand, rejected Trump's latest threats. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that these were an attempt to distract from domestic political problems in the USA. “America’s economic terrorism threatens the global economy and the national sovereignty of countries around the world.”

Iran is open to dialogue with the US but does not confuse negotiations with surrender, added Mohammad Mochber, an adviser to the country's spiritual leader. Military pressure and sanctions would not break Iran's resolve.

Two and a half months before the important midterm elections in the USA, Trump is under great pressure domestically - also because he has not been able to claim any obvious successes in his war against Iran for weeks. Neither on the diplomatic nor on the military level does it seem to be progressing in his favor.
