Trump promises $5,000 to every adult if Republicans win Congress and proposes renaming the Strait of Hormuz

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, promised this Wednesday to deliver $5,000 to every American adult if the Republican Party maintains control of Congress after the midterm elections on November 3.

During the Republican national convention in Dallas (Texas), Trump assured that the money would come from the revenue generated by the tariffs. "If the Republicans win, you win with us and you will have five thousand dollars," he stated to his followers, although he has not detailed how the program would be financed or how the payment would be made.

The proposal comes in the midst of a battle for control of Congress, with especially close elections. Polls point to a possible Democratic victory in the House of Representatives and a very close fight for the Senate. Trump had previously proposed similar formulas, such as a "dividend" linked to the Department of Government Efficiency or $2,000 checks during the tariff war, initiatives that ultimately did not materialize.

During the same speech, Trump also stated that he will propose changing the name of the Strait of Hormuz to "Trump Strait", in the midst of Washington's war against Iran. "We control Hormuz. I think we should call the Strait of Hormuz 'Trump'. You should get something out of this. The Trump Strait," he said.

"It's going to be called that, ladies and gentlemen. I will make an announcement," the president added, without specifying when he will formalize the proposal or by what procedure.

Trump has also assured that the eventual name change is not an initiative of the Iranian Government.

"I'm sure the Iranian leadership would like to tell you that it was their idea. It wasn't their idea," he said as the Republican audience laughed and applauded.

The proposal comes at a time of renewed tension around the strait, after the United States destroyed five Iranian oil tankers following missile attacks against its warships, according to the Pentagon, and Tehran responded with attacks against a US base in Jordan and against a dozen vessels in the vicinity of Hormuz.

The escalation has further reduced traffic through this strategic maritime route and led the price of Brent to exceed $100 per barrel this Wednesday.
