Trump rejects Iran's Strait of Hormuz reopening proposal, claims US 'winning tremendously'

Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end fighting, claiming the US was "winning tremendously".

Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, had presented a seven-day plan to American negotiators on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It stated that Tehran would reopen the key waterway and resume talks on its nuclear programme if the US lifts its naval blockade, waives oil sanctions and observes a ceasefire that includes Lebanon.

Araghchi told reporters at the United Nations: "The choice ‌now rests with the United States."

But the US president said on Saturday: "I rejected their deal. They want to make a deal to open the Hormuz Strait immediately because they're losing so badly. We're winning tremendously.

"They want to make a deal and I think that's fine, I like making a deal too. What they want to do is immediately open the Hormuz Strait ... because they have no money coming in, because they get their money from the Hormuz Strait."

In a post on his Truth Social platform in the early hours of Saturday UK time, President Trump branded the Strait of Hormuz "Trump Strait" in a taunt aimed at Tehran.

Iran awaiting response through mediators after Trump reaction to proposal

Iran's foreign minister Abbas Aragchi said that Tehran had seen the initial reaction from Donald Trump to its proposal but had yet to receive a response through mediators.

He said they were waiting ⁠for the mediators to convey the definitive US position and would make ‌a ​decision based ‌on ⁠it.

The US president told reporters he rejected the proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end fighting, insisting the US was "winning tremendously".

He said on Saturday: "I rejected their deal. They want to make a deal to open the Hormuz Strait immediately because they're losing so badly. We're winning tremendously.

"They want to make a deal and I think that's fine, I like making a deal too. What they want to do is immediately open the Hormuz Strait ... because they have no money coming in, because they get their money from the Hormuz Strait."

Russia calls for return to MoU after Trump rejects deal

Russia has called for the implementation of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov described the agreement, made in June, as "a fair deal, an honest deal", Arab News reported.

He told a media conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York: "And since it was signed at the highest level, and this was done in an informed way, why not revert back to it?"

‘Wait for Budget,’ says Burnham amid questions on fuel cost-cutting plan

Motorists must "wait until the Budget" to find out whether fuel duty will be cut to tackle soaring diesel prices amid the war in Iran, Andy Burnham has said.

The prime minister warned "world events" were behind the rising cost of fuel at the pump and told BBC East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire’s Tim Iredale that people were being asked to pay "too much for the basics in this country – for housing, for water".

According to the RAC, the average price of diesel has hit 198.32p and could reach record highs over the coming days.

Simon Williams, the automotive firm’s head of policy, has forecast "the record of 199.09p will almost certainly be surpassed over the weekend", at the same time the Labour Party’s conference gets under way in Liverpool.

"Sadly for drivers, there appears to be no end in sight to high prices at the pumps as the cost of a barrel of oil hit 106 dollars (£79) having been around that 100 dollar (£75) mark for the last two weeks," Mr Williams said.

"A significant drop in the price of oil is badly needed but this seems unlikely without the US and Iran striking a deal."

Mr Burnham faced questions about the cost of fuel as he took questions as part of a marathon broadcast media round on Friday evening.
