Beau Lamarre-Condon, 31, is accused of fatally shooting Jesse Baird and Luke Davies with his police service weapon in Baird's Paddington home on 19 February 2024. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and one charge of aggravated break and enter. The defence claims the victims were accidentally shot in two separate struggles while he acted in self-defence, and that he cleaned up the scene and disposed of the bodies because he panicked considerably.
Beau Lamarre-Condon said he was trying to “get back into a positive mindset” in voice notes he sent in the days after he allegedly killed two men in a Sydney terrace.
The recordings were sent to a man he had met on a dating app and played to the jury in his double murder trial on Tuesday.
Lamarre-Condon, 31, is accused of fatally shooting couple Jesse Baird and Luke Davies with his police service weapon in Baird’s Paddington home on 19 February 2024.
He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and one charge of aggravated break and enter.
A man, who had matched with Lamarre-Condon on a dating app in early 2024, had his statement read to a NSW supreme court jury on Tuesday.
He explained the pair began casually dating but were not in formal relationship.
On the night of Baird and Davies’ alleged murders, Lamarre-Condon texted the man asking: “How was your Monday?”
The man responded the next morning, on 20 February 2024, and Lamarre-Condon replied hours later with a voice note, which was played to the New South Wales supreme court jury on Tuesday.
“Hey, I’m sorry I’ve been a bit MIA, I’ve literally been very sick and then I’ve got this operation tomorrow so that’s not fun,” Lamarre-Condon said in the recording.
“I’m trying to get back into a positive mindset. I’ve not been to the gym, I have no intentions of going to the gym this week.”
Lamarre-Condon explained he was supposed to attend a boat party that weekend but was going to cancel because “my body is not looking the best right now”, the jury heard.
The other man had tried to arrange plans with the officer, but Lamarre-Condon, in his voice note, said he had the Taylor Swift concert on that night and plans earlier that day depended on the result of his surgery.
“Don’t take it personal, I literally haven’t replied to any of my friends,” Lamarre-Condon said in the recording. “I’m in bed at the moment, just literally not feeling the best.”
In another voice note, sent straight afterwards, Lamarre-Condon said: “I’m sorry, I don’t want to sound like I’m moaning and whinging, I’m actually a pretty positive person.”
Later that night, the man noticed the officer had removed his Instagram and asked why. Lamarre-Condon responded in another voice note about midnight on 21 February 2024.
“Don’t worry, I didn’t block you or anything like that,” he said in the recording, played in court.
“I’ve just shut down all my social media, I just need a break mentally … you don’t notice how addictive it is until you’re on it every second.”
The jury has previously seen CCTV footage of Lamarre-Condon attending St Vincent’s hospital and heard from a surgeon that he had undergone a minor surgery on 21 February 2024.
That morning, the officer sent the man he had been seeing a photo from his hospital bed with the message: “I’m just looking forward to sleeping.”
His defence team has claimed Baird and Davies were accidentally shot in two separate struggles with the accused while he acted in “self-defence”.
Lamarre-Condon cleaned up the scene and disposed of the bodies afterwards because he “panicked considerably”, the defence lawyer John Stratton SC has said.
