Pensions in Turkey remain below the hunger line

There are over 17 million retirees in Turkey. The pensions that retirees receive are not even enough to cover basic kitchen expenses. Civil servants are postponing their retirement due to low pensions. Even the salaries of many retired civil servants are below the hunger line. The "hunger limit", which is the monthly food expenditure of a family of four, calculated by Türk-İş, has reached 37 thousand 388 liras as of August. According to the data of the Strategy and Budget Directorate (SBB), a significant part of the pensions is below this figure.

5.1 MILLION PENSIONERS

According to SBB's data, the lowest worker pension is below the hunger line with 24 thousand 325 lira. Currently, the lowest pension is 23 thousand 552 lira. The retirees who receive the lowest salary are Bağ-Kur agricultural and tradesmen retirees. 5.1 million of over 17 million retirees receive the lowest monthly salary of 23 thousand 552 lira.

CONDITION OF RETIRED CIVIL SERVANTS

Even the salaries of retired civil servants have fallen below the hunger line. The lowest Pension Fund pension is 30 thousand 403 lira. According to SBB's data, even the average Pension Fund pension is below the hunger line at 37 thousand 29 lira.

IT'S NOT EVEN ENOUGH FOR THE RENT

Even the rent for a middle-class house in metropolitan cities starts from 30 thousand liras. Many retirees' salaries are not even enough to pay rent. Instead of making a comprehensive regulation on pensions, the government is satisfied with the increases in the legislation. The minimum pension is increased every 6 months. Due to the “lowest monthly” application, there is no difference between those who pay more and longer premiums and those who pay less and shorter premiums. Millions of retirees are equal to the lowest monthly salary.
