DONETSK, October 8. /TASS/. Ukrainian troops killed a Russian prisoner of war by blowing up a booby-trapped GPS collar that they had put on him, Russian defense sources told TASS.

The collar was detonated because he refused to go to where Russian troops were stationed and act as a suicide bomber, they added.

Earlier, an escaped Russian POW told TASS that Ukrainian forces had begun using Russian prisoners of war as suicide bombers, sending them toward Russian positions while wearing booby-trapped collars equipped with GPS transmitters. A Ukrainian drone monitors the suicide bomber’s movements, and coordination is carried out via radio. If the prisoner refuses to carry out his mission, the detonator on the collar is remotely activated.

"Ukrainian militants detonated a collar with explosives on a Russian prisoner. The guy became another suicide bomber. It’s obvious that he was sent to infiltrate our positions, but he didn’t go anywhere," the sources said.

TASS has obtained video footage captured by a drone shortly before the soldier’s death. The footage shows the soldier, wearing an unknown device around his neck, sitting motionless in a wooded area.

Open Questions

  • Can the drone footage be independently verified?
  • Are there other witnesses to the event?
