Administrative court hears lawsuits against municipal financial equalization

How much money does the state have to give to municipalities? The Neustadt an der Weinstrasse administrative court will deal with this question on Friday. The 3rd Chamber is hearing complaints from the city of Pirmasens and the district of Südwestpfalz against the municipal financial equalization (10:00 a.m.).

The municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate have been complaining about inadequate financial resources for years. According to information from the Association of Cities and Districts, 64 percent of municipalities were planning a deficit for 2026. The hearing in Neustadt is public, but the space for the audience is limited.

The appointment is the first judicial instance. Both plaintiffs hope that the question of whether the design of the municipal financial equalization meets the constitutional requirements will be clarified. The lawsuits are carried out in close coordination with the city council and the Rhineland-Palatinate district council. The two municipal umbrella associations themselves are not entitled to sue.
