Von der Leyen: "It's time to create a true Transport Union"

“Our single market needs better and faster connections. We need to build the transport system for decades to come, and I believe the time has come for a true Transport Union.”

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said this at the opening ceremony of the Connecting Europe Days event underway in Brussels, indicating various strategies to achieve the goal. These include the completion of the trans-European transport network, also known as the Ten-T strategy.

"Many of you - he added - are contributing: a network of railways, waterways and roads that connect our cities, our ports and our terminals. We must eliminate bottlenecks between member states. We must transform national systems into a single, truly European network, and we are working to make this vision a reality across Europe". "This - he continued - is exactly the purpose of Ten-T: to fill the gaps on our map, eliminate barriers between national networks and transform them into a single European network. The economic potential is enormous. According to our estimates, the completion of the network could increase European GDP by 2.4% by 2050. This is equivalent to 467 billion euros. I therefore invite all of you to continue the work and complete the network as planned".
