Windows 11 27H2 could be a major update

It is claimed that Microsoft is making extensive preparations for 2027. Windows 11 27H2 could be the operating system's biggest update since 24H2 in 2024, according to The Verge's Tom Warren. In addition, the company's agenda is to strengthen the current version instead of Windows 12.

What Can Windows 11 27H2 Change?

Microsoft is said to be planning Windows 11 27H2 as a full operating system upgrade. In other words, the core components of the system will be replaced or seriously renewed. That's why the update will not be content with unlocking features that are available on PCs.

25H2 and 26H2 were distributed in small activation packages. According to Microsoft's statement, these versions share the same maintenance platform. Therefore, suitable systems can be upgraded with a small download and a single reboot.

27H2 will be more like the 24H2 transition. Therefore, more extensive compatibility testing may be required. It is also stated that Windows Insider tests may start earlier than usual in 2027.

Performance Studies Continue

Performance remains among Microsoft's priorities. The company announced that the response speed of Windows 11 increased by up to 20% with the latest improvements. On the other hand, it was stated that multitasking was accelerated by up to 40% on systems with 8 GB RAM. Because these figures are based on the company's internal measurements.

However, these improvements are not specific to 27H2. Already available on supported 26H2 installations. Still, it shows Microsoft's renewed focus on efficiency.

Another important topic is Intel's Advanced Performance Extensions (APX) technology. Additionally, experimental Windows 11 builds have started showing APX support. This technology can enable properly optimized 64-bit applications to run more efficiently on compatible processors.

APX increases the number of general-purpose processor registers (small areas where the CPU temporarily holds data) from 16 to 32. Thus, memory operations and instruction load can be reduced. However, Microsoft has not confirmed that APX will come with 27H2. Moreover, earnings will depend on hardware and software support.

New Wallpapers and Windows 12 Uncertainty

It is claimed that Microsoft will replace Windows 11's familiar Bloom wallpaper with new designs. Additionally, new visuals may be introduced at Microsoft Ignite 2026, which will be held this month. The designs include folded and colorful shapes surrounded by clouds.

Different variations are being prepared for consumer and corporate versions. For example, consumer designs may reflect themes of play, productivity, creativity, and performance. Windows 11 Pro, on the other hand, will maintain a color scheme closer to the original Bloom aesthetic.

A wider wallpaper distribution is planned for January 2027. This will happen before the big annual update. On the other hand, Microsoft has not officially rejected the possibility of a new Windows version.

For now, 27H2's final features, hardware requirements and exact release date are unknown. The first event where the new wallpapers will be seen is this month's Microsoft Ignite 2026.
