Donald Trump's envoys talked in Moscow and Kiev about ending the war

Last weekend, Donald Trump's representatives - Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner - held a series of talks in Moscow and Kiev. On Saturday, they met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and a day later with Volodymyr Zelensky. Although no groundbreaking declarations were made after both meetings, the atmosphere around the negotiations clearly became more intense.

It was the first visit of American negotiators to Kiev since the beginning of their involvement in the 2025 peace talks. Witkoff and Kushner have been visiting Moscow regularly for months, where they are holding talks on ending the war started by Russia with the local authorities.

Conversations about safety and support

President Zelensky described the meeting with American envoys as "very substantive." As he revealed, the talks concerned, among others, security and economic guarantees for Ukraine, supplies of missiles for air defense systems and a support package for the coming winter. Both sides expressed hope for a quick resumption of trilateral negotiations with the participation of Ukraine, Russia and the United States.

The last round of such talks took place in February. Since then, Ukraine and Russia have only held separate consultations with the American delegation.

A chance for peace before winter?

Jared Kushner emphasized that the United States is "working to create conditions" to end the war before winter, but there is no guarantee that such a scenario will come true. In turn, Steve Witkoff emphasized that both Russia and Ukraine must be ready to compromise to end the conflict, which has been going on for over four years.

American negotiators say they are seeking a diplomatic, not military, solution.

"Trump is expected to talk to Putin and then to Zelensky after being informed by his envoys about the latest round of talks," a source familiar with the matter told the Kyiv Independent.
