Xi Jinping reaffirms China's determination on Taiwan issue

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his determination to fight Taiwan's pro-independence forces and external interference in the island's affairs on Wednesday, the eve of the National Day. Xi Jinping also reaffirmed the goal of “reunification” of mainland China and Taiwan. Communist China considers Taiwan under democratic government to be an “inalienable” part of Chinese territory, and “reunification” to be non-negotiable and inevitable, even if force is necessary.

“We should deepen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, resolutely suppress separatist forces advocating Taiwan independence, oppose interference from external forces, promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and advance the great cause of national reunification,” Xi Jinping said in a speech transcribed by the state agency Xinhua and delivered at a reception in Beijing. Beijing sees Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te, an ardent defender of the island's sovereignty, as a "separatist", "a creator of crises and an instigator of wars".

Xi asks US to oppose Taiwan independence

China has significantly increased pressure, including military pressure, on Taiwan in recent years. It fights any foreign interaction with Taiwan likely to call into question the principle of “one China”. US support for Taiwan is a prominent element of the relationship between Beijing and Washington. President Xi asked his counterpart Donald Trump during a state visit last week to handle the Taiwan issue “with caution,” according to Xinhua. He openly demanded that the United States "oppose" Taiwan's independence and move away from its historical position of not supporting it.

Xi Jinping's visit to the United States aimed to maintain the climate of relaxation between the two powers, after months of trade war in 2025 and despite the persistence of differences and rivalry. Xi Jinping affirmed on Wednesday the need to bring “more certainty and positive energy to a world marked by changes and turbulence”.
