Decision in the Yaren Mercan case: 7 years and 1 month in prison for the defendant

Stating that he is sorry for being involved in such an incident, Efe said, "I wish such an incident had not happened. I wish I had not consumed alcohol. Since I have been in prison, I have not been able to pay my credit card debt for 5 months. Papers are also coming to the prison. I regret that such an incident happened. I am not a murderer, I am not a murderer. When I am released, I will go to my family members and apologize." he said.

The complainant's father, Mehmet Mercan, also said that he carries a heavy burden as a father. Emphasizing that her daughter was studying at the faculty of medicine under difficult conditions, Mercan stated that the defendant was driving at high speed and had a high alcohol content.

Mercan requested that the defendant be sentenced without reduction and that his detention be continued.

The court judge, who also listened to the lawyers of the parties, sentenced the defendant Efe to 7 years and 1 month in prison for the crime of "causing death by conscious negligence" and ordered his release by deciding to confiscate his driver's license for 2 years.

The lawyer of the victim family stated in his statement to journalists outside the courthouse after the hearing that the defendant was punished for the crime charged without any reduction in court.

Stating that they trust in justice and want the Yaren Mercan file to be a precedent for other files, the lawyer stated that the family was somewhat relieved that no discount was given to the defendant.

The family's lawyer emphasized that they will follow the court decision at every stage and stated that they aimed to raise awareness about the necessity of not driving under the influence of alcohol from the very beginning of the case.
