Massive attack on Ukraine's energy sector

On Wednesday morning, Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky announced that Russia had launched massive attacks on the country's energy infrastructure. As he emphasized, that night rockets and drones hit energy facilities in Kiev, the Kiev Oblast and other regions.

"Since summer, there has been practically no day when the enemy did not attack energy infrastructure. However, such a massive and complex attack took place for the first time since the end of the previous heating season," Korecki wrote on Telegram.

Effects of the attacks: destruction and power outages

As a result of the night attacks, there was serious damage to the energy infrastructure. The private company DTEK reported damage in Kiev, where energy workers have already restored electricity supplies to over 8,000 customers on the left bank of the city. Repair work is still ongoing and crews are struggling to restore stable power.

According to Ukrenerho, the Ukrainian transmission system operator, on Wednesday morning there were power outages in Kiev and five oblasts: Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy and Kharkiv. Despite the difficult situation, electricity consumption has recently decreased thanks to sunny weather, which favors the operation of home solar power plants.

Victims and scale of destruction

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that as a result of Russian attacks, at least five people were killed, including a child, and 14 were injured. The main target of Russian troops was the energy sector in Kiev and the Kiev Oblast, but the attacks also affected residential buildings, civilian infrastructure and railways.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia used Zirkon/Oniks anti-ship missiles, Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles and as many as 188 Shahed combat drones in the attacks, of which 86 were jet models.

Preparations for further attacks

Prime Minister Korecki appealed to local authorities to check the readiness of emergency power systems in critical facilities and complete works related to their installation as soon as possible. Centrenerho's general director, Serhiy Isachenko, assured that specialists will start renovation work immediately as soon as the security situation allows.
