The European Southern Observatory said that its Very Large Telescope in Chile observed signs related to the debris of an abandoned Falcon 9 rocket of the US Space Exploration Technology Corporation that hit the moon in the early morning of the 5th Eastern Time.
Telescopes in Arizona and Chile observed the impact of rocket debris on the moon. Scientists used the Very Large Telescope to measure sodium and lithium in the plume, but no direct imaging evidence has yet been obtained. In the future, they will need to rely on Korean and American spacecraft to search for impact craters.
The remains of a Falcon 9 rocket from the American space exploration company SpaceX are expected to hit the moon at a speed of more than 5,000 miles per hour on Wednesday (5th). The upper stage of this rocket, which weighs about 4,500 kilograms, will hit the northwest side of the moon with a power equivalent to 3 tons of yellow explosives. It is the second known incident of an abandoned rocket accidentally hitting the moon.
