China responds to Trump's economic threats against Iran, and Iran considers them illegal

On Friday, China responded to US President Donald Trump's threat to launch an "economic day of judgment" against Iran, and considered that sanctions do not serve "the interest of any party."

Trump on Wednesday vowed to impose "massive economic consequences" on countries that continue to do business with Tehran, and Treasury Secretary Scott Besent later urged Beijing to "get on board."

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said in a press conference on Friday that his country believes that “sanctions and pressure methods are not the solution,” and Jian urged the parties concerned to settle the dispute through negotiation and dialogue and reach a political settlement.

Beijing is a primary source of economic support for Iran, but it has followed a cautious diplomatic path amid the American-Iranian conflict, and has maintained open channels of communication with representatives of both sides. As for the influence the United States can exercise over China, Trump's options are increasingly limited.

Along with China, Iran also condemned what it described as Trump's "illegal" threat to launch an intensified economic campaign against Tehran.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said on Friday that Tehran is ready to “sacrifice its wealth” in defense of the country’s “dignity and honour,” according to what was reported by the semi-official Iranian Tasnim News Agency.

Ghalibaf added: “We must plan to deal with unjust sanctions so that we can overcome them.”
