Massive demonstrations in Germany to protest the victory of the Alternative for Germany party

In Berlin, the police estimated the crowds at about 5,000 demonstrators, noting that the demonstration passed peacefully without incident, while the number of participants was estimated at about 14,000 people, according to the organizers.

The demonstration was launched at the urgent call of the "Compact" organization and the "Fridays for Future" climate movement.

Prominent German climate activist Louisa Neubauer, and the front-runners of the Green Party and the Left Party in the Berlin state elections scheduled for September 20, participated in the protest.

The demonstrators carried banners with slogans including: “Fascism is no alternative” and “Stop the AfD Nazis! End racism and social cuts,” while the crowds chanted: “We are all against fascism!”

The party won the elections that took place the day before yesterday, Sunday, by a large margin, but failed to achieve an absolute majority, which leaves the door open to the possibility of forming the first state government led by the Alternative for Germany party in Germany.

The local branch of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was classified by the domestic intelligence service as “definitely far-right.”

Protests have also been called in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where a new state parliament is due to be elected later this month and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party leads in opinion polls.

In Schwerin, several hundred demonstrators gathered, according to police reports, while more than 500 people gathered in Rostock to participate in a group singing.

In Essen, about 1,200 people gathered, according to police. Carrying rainbow flags and cardboard banners with messages such as "Ban the AfD now" and "No place for Nazis", participants roamed the streets of the city centre.

Hundreds of people also gathered in Potsdam to protest against the AfD, as well as in the state of Hesse. About 80 people protested in Kassel.
