Geneticist reveals the causes of migraines

Most often, migraine occurs due to a complex of external factors and a person’s heredity. The reason was revealed by geneticist Natalya Zakharzhevskaya in a conversation with RT.

According to her, experts in most cases cannot determine the exact cause of the disease. The geneticist emphasized that in some types, including familial hemiplegic migraine, the cause is a breakdown in a specific gene. However, most often it is impossible to reliably establish the origin.

“A large study involving more than 102 thousand people with migraine and about 700 thousand without it, identified 123 genomic regions associated with the risk of migraine. Moreover, 86 of them were not known before,” noted Zakharzhevskaya.
