(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Oh Kyu-jin = A Gallup Korea opinion poll was released on the 4th, showing that President Lee Jae-myung's approval rating for his administration fell slightly from last week, hitting a new low since he took office.
Amid the growing political controversy surrounding Minister of Gender Equality and Family candidate Yong Hye-in, who is in her 30s, the approval rating for those in their 20s fell by 6 percentage points to the 20% range.
According to a survey conducted by Gallup Korea on the 1st to 3rd among 1,001 people over the age of 18 across the country, the positive evaluation of President Lee's job performance was 40%, the lowest since he took office.
President Lee's approval rating for government affairs fell 2 percentage points compared to the fourth week of August survey (42%) released on the 28th of last month.
The response that they were ‘doing it wrong’ was 51%, exceeding half for two weeks in a row. ‘Opinion reserved’ was 9%.
The most common reason for positive evaluation was 'economy and people's livelihood' (14%), followed by 'diplomacy' (13%), 'generally doing well' (10%), 'communication' (8%), and 'real estate policy' (6%).
The reasons for the negative evaluation were 'real estate policy' (23%), 'economy and people's livelihood' (11%), 'personnel' (9%), 'morality issues and avoidance of trial', and 'generally wrong' (over 6%).
By age, the positive evaluation of government performance among those aged 18 to 29 (25%) decreased by 6 percentage points compared to the previous week, reaching the 20% range for the first time.
The approval rating for government administration among people in their 30s (31%) also dropped by 4 percentage points compared to last week.
Among those in their 40s (55%) and 50s (49%), the approval rating fell slightly, but was around 50%.
By region, it fell 9 percentage points in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (32%) compared to the previous week, and in Gwangju and Jeolla (67%) it fell 8 percentage points during the same period.
It was also in the 30% range in Seoul (38%), Incheon/Gyeonggi (38%), and Daejeon/Sejong/Chungcheong (35%).
On the other hand, in Daegu and Gyeongbuk (34%), the approval rating for the government rose 8 percentage points from last week.
The approval rating for political parties was 38% for the Democratic Party of Korea and 30% for the People Power Party.
The Democratic Party fell 1 percentage point from last week and remained in the 30% range for two consecutive weeks, while the People Power Party rose 5 percentage points, hitting its highest level since the inauguration of the Lee Jae-myung administration.
The gap between the two parties was 8 percentage points, the smallest since the fourth week of May 2025 (Democratic Party 42%, People Power Party 36%).
Among the moderates, 35% supported the Democratic Party of Korea, 24% supported the People Power Party, and 34% of voters did not support a specific political party.
The Homeland Innovation Party was 3%, the New Reform Party and the Progressive Party each were 1%, and those with no party affiliation were 25%.
In a survey of future political leader preferences (free response), independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon (9%) ranked first for the first time. However, this figure is 15% points lower than the March 2024 survey (24%) during the time of the People Power Party emergency committee chairman.
Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok (7%) and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon (5%) followed.
As pan-ruling party runners, Cho Kuk Innovation Policy Research Institute Director of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party (4%), Democratic Party Rep. Chung Cheong-rae and Song Young-gil, and Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik (2%) were selected. Opposition runners included People Power Party Representative Jang Dong-hyuk (4%), Rep. Lee Jin-sook (2%) of the same party, and New Reform Party Rep. Lee Jun-seok (1%).
7% of respondents chose other people, and 55% had reservations.
This survey was conducted using telephone interview methods using randomly selected wireless phone virtual numbers. The sampling error is ±3.1p at the 95% confidence level, the contact rate is 47.4%, and the response rate is 10.9%.
