Incheon Airport, ahead of Terminal 1 renewal, will an alternative terminal be created?

Incheon International Airport Corporation is reviewing plans to create an alternative terminal ahead of the comprehensive improvement project for Passenger Terminal 1.

Incheon International Airport Corporation announced on the 10th that it will conduct a preliminary feasibility study on the development of alternative facilities for Incheon Airport, including a new terminal.

The Corporation is investing a total project cost of 1.778 trillion won by 2035 to improve the aging facilities and operating environment of Terminal 1, which has a total floor area of ​​506,000 m2.

This project involves dividing the terminal into several areas and constructing them sequentially without stopping airport operations.

The problem is that passenger handling capacity is reduced to the extent that construction is taking place, which inevitably reduces overall airport operational efficiency.

Based on the entire processing capacity of Terminal 1, which is 54 million people per year, if divided into four regions, the processing capacity of 13.5 million people per region decreases.

The Corporation believes that development of an alternative terminal is inevitable in order to minimize terminal congestion and inconvenience and reduce construction period and costs during the renewal of Terminal 1.

When building a new terminal, sufficient passenger handling capacity can be secured, and it can also flexibly respond to mid- to long-term improvement needs of major facilities such as the concourse and Terminal 2.

In the case of Incheon Airport, there is ample idle land needed to build replacement facilities.

In addition to reviewing business feasibility through a preliminary feasibility study service, the corporation plans to establish plans for alternative facilities by considering applications for government preliminary feasibility studies.

An official from Incheon International Airport Corporation said, “We will closely review the necessity and timeliness of the project by comprehensively considering future aviation demand and facility capacity.”
