The UK will host the G20 Summit in Manchester next November, focusing on artificial intelligence security issues

The G20 summit is scheduled to be held in Manchester next November. Prime Minister Bernan recently announced that artificial intelligence (AI) will be a major focus of the summit agenda, especially the issue of AI security.

According to information released by the British Prime Minister's Office, next year's G20 summit is scheduled to be held from November 27th to 28th. In addition to Manchester, events will be held across the UK throughout next year, across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Such a plan aims to allow "every part of the UK" to benefit from the UK's G20 presidency.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who took office in July this year, served as the Chief Minister of Manchester for many years (May 2017 to June 2026). After successfully moving from the local government to the central government and taking over as party leader and prime minister through intra-party procedures, Bonnam set a precedent in British politics by setting up the Prime Minister's Office's Northern Office "No10 North" in Manchester to help implement his political views of decentralizing power and resources, refusing to dominate London, and promoting balanced local development.

Although Burnham is closely linked to Manchester, according to official information, the selection of Manchester to host the G20 summit was a decision made by the government of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier this year.

The last time the UK hosted the G20 summit was in 2009, after the 2008 international financial crisis. At that time, countries reached a consensus at the summit and proposed more funds to stabilize the global financial and economic situation. The British government hopes that next year's G20 summit will be equally "milestone".

When Bonan attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York recently, he mentioned that the UK is a trustworthy and appealing intermediary and is particularly suitable to provide a platform to promote dialogue and reach consensus among all parties. The UK should make good use of this advantage to help all parties jointly address one of the most significant challenges of this era, namely Frontier AI.

Bonan pointed out that major basic decisions related to AI must be made by the democratically elected government entrusted by voters. Among them, regarding AI security risk management and control, the UK has the world-leading AI Security Institute. However, during its tenure as the G20 presidency, the UK will go further and promote all parties to reach a globally agreed and globally accepted single principle and standard to ensure the safe development of AI. If necessary, the UK will also formulate new domestic regulations.

Since the government of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (October 2022 to July 2024), the UK has taken taking the lead in "AI security governance" and ensuring that the UK gains international advantages in related technologies, systems and agenda setting as a major AI development goal.
