The fire at the Tianwaitian landfill in Keelung has been brought under control and efforts to put out the fire are ongoing.

The area where discarded mattresses and tires were piled up in the Keelung Tianwaitian landfill caught fire at 1:39 this afternoon, and the fire was fierce. Fire Chief You Jiayi said that the fire is currently under control and should not spread anymore. Firefighting efforts are still ongoing and it will take some time to extinguish the fire.

You Jiayi said that so far, a total of 37 vehicles and 67 people have been dispatched to rescue, as well as the New Taipei and Keelung Port Fire Brigades and related reservoir trucks supported by Taipei. A total of 8 vehicles and 17 people have been dispatched. The fire is currently under control and is still being extinguished. It should not spread outwards.

It is estimated that the fire destroyed about 1,700 mattresses covering an area of ​​about 300 square meters. Environmental Protection Bureau Director Ma Zhonghao said that when waste mattresses and tires accumulate to a certain amount, outsourced manufacturers will remove them.

The manufacturer's machinery was only delivered to the site yesterday to prepare for crushing waste mattresses, but it had not yet been dismantled. An unexplained fire broke out this afternoon. The timing was "coincidentally". The manufacturer's personnel had already accepted police and fire-related inquiries to clarify the cause of the fire.

Wu Yuchen, spokesman for the Keelung City Government, said that Mayor Xie Guoliang went to Tianwaitian after the meeting in the afternoon to learn about the disaster relief situation. In the evening, he also convened the Environmental Protection Bureau, the Health Bureau, the Fire Bureau and the district office to conduct an inter-bureau contingency meeting to remind citizens and what contingency measures should be taken.
