Domestic examination training, from celebrity name trademark examination to appeal procedures

(Daejeon = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Jun-ho = The Ministry of Intellectual Property announced on the 6th that it will run the '2026 Korea-ASEAN Trademark Examination Practice Training Course' online for trademark examiners and related workers in 11 ASEAN countries from the 7th to the 10th.

It comprehensively covers the entire trademark examination, including introduction to the Korean Intellectual Property Office and the trademark system, trademark examination practice (procedures and search strategies), objections, and examination/trial appeal procedures.

Instructors comprised of civil servants from related departments of the Ministry of Intellectual Property and experts in each field, including patent attorneys, will share Korea's systems and practical experience with ASEAN member countries.

In particular, customized subjects with high field applicability were included, such as trademark examination consisting of celebrity names, atypical (sound, smell, color, three-dimensional shape, hologram, motion, etc.) trademark examination, and trademark application and management strategies of multinational companies, reflecting the demand of ASEAN member countries surveyed in advance.

Since Korea and ASEAN signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of intellectual property (IP) in Brunei in 2018, they have continued to cooperate in the field of intellectual property by holding high-level meetings on intellectual property between Korea and ASEAN every year.

Song Seong-heon, director of the International Intellectual Property Training Institute, said, "We hope that Korea's advanced trademark examination system and know-how will spread throughout ASEAN, and that intellectual property cooperation between the two sides will become more stable."
